![]() And every afternoon she would help the old man with the heavy chores of tending the grounds. Now everyday to school, Jenny would get up an hour early and go to the church to water the flowers. She was able to get double the work done! Jenny was reminded about the song he hummed and thought it would be a excellent way to witness so she accepted. Again, Jenny said nothing and went to work on the flowers.įinally it was time to go home and as she was putting her tools away the old man asked her if she wouldn't mind helping him some more. As she worked she listened to the humming and wondered if he knew what the meaning was behind that song. As she worked the old man hummed Amazing Grace as he pruned the flowers. Soon she found herself knee deep in dirt digging out holes for the new flower plants. Since he was not able to get up and work on the flowers she offered to help him til he could walk properly. Within minutes she was sitting on the porch sipping a coke with the old man placing an ice pack on his ankle. ![]() But Jenny said nothing just went inside and called the school for a day of absence, and went about fixing up a ice pack. ![]() What church would not let a man inside with a injured foot? And a man that has been working for them as long as he had? She understood he was labeled the town drunk but that the church might have been a little harsh. The old man looked ashamed when he told her that he was not allowed to go in under any circumstances. The church was never locked and she was hoping that she could get him in and then sprint off to her first class. She asked him if he thought he could make it inside to the kitchen to put ice on his ankle. Jenny realized that she couldn't leave him there to suffer so she helped him up and they hobbled to the steps of the church. She picks herself up and was about to walk on off thinking the man could at least get himself up when she looked down and saw that the man had a twisted foot. As it so would happen one day Jenny was running late and ran smack into the old man on the sidewalk. And as usual she would ignore the old man working in the church yard. Jenny ,as usual, would have to walk past the church to get to the school. Years went by and now Jenny is a freshmen in High school. Any time her family would go to town and see him they would turn the other way. She usually walked on past without paying attention to the old man. She once heard her mama say that he was the town drunk who could only get that job out of the charity of the church. Ever day ,when she pasted the church that her family grew up in,there was a man cleaning the yards. The year was 1965 and Jenny was a brave 9 year old walking to school.
